Beholden

Years ago, before I was a published author, I had a personal blog with very few readers. I still enjoyed updating it, and I was still writing, though I hadn’t yet gotten anything into shape to submit for publication. But on that blog, I started writing a serial story about magic and love. I wrote a sequel too. But while I was doing that, I did get published, and after a while, I didn’t have much to say on the personal blog and decided to stop updating it.

Fast forward to about two years ago. I’d been published and was focusing on writing new things. I decided to revisit the old world I’d created in that serial story, revamp it and tweak, create new characters, and write a new story. This one would have several sequels, and the overarching plot would not be resolved in one book, but go through all of them, even as new couples fell in love in each one. It was ambitious and I was excited.

Things…happened. I won’t go into them, because there’s no sense in rehashing it, but suffice it to say, I shelved the book I’d written and the idea to go with it. I mean, I thought about it over the years, and even had an idea to revamp parts of it, and write a new first story and and and…

Anyway, it never happened.

But lately, I got to thinking about that story again, about the world and about the metaplot. Since I had already decided I was going to stop letting fear hold me back, I dusted off the story, made a few edits and tweaks, realized it was pretty good, and submitted it for publication.

Beholden was picked up by JMS Books and will be out in April. It’s got love and magic and a problem that needs to be fixed. It’s the first of a trilogy. It’s about Julian and Wes, and how they fall in love while trying to do their jobs.

I adore it. And I can’t wait to bring it to you.
